Practicing Together: Structure your Practices to Get More

Practicing as a team isn’t monkey business. You don’t just pick up a controller, log online, and start shooting things. Well, you can. You just won’t get much out of the so-called “practice.” What you really need is structure. Enjoy as Throoper shares his team’s philosophy.

So, you have your team and want to start down the path to improvement. Join the club.

No doubt your mind will move towards practice. After all, playing together only makes sense, right? Getting a good practice session in is vital for improvement, but most teams don’t know how to practice to make the best out of their time and maximize benefits earned through each session.

The truth is, most teams live under the preconceived notion that simply playing game after game is adequate practice; sadly, this belief is one of the largest factors that separates the good teams from the great. It’s more than just playing together. It’s analyzing. Learning. Re-analyzing. Applying. Analyzing. Scrapping. Then, doing it all over again until you find approaches that work. At that point, it’s all about refinement.

And, no matter how much you might wish, just playing won’t do that. That’s why a number of tools, such as the Theater in Halo 3, are invaluable.

Think Small. And Often.

Much like a football team, before all else, you need to avoid trying to sneak everything into large mega-sessions. You should instead try to hold different practices, at different times and on different days,…

I like the aspect about mental fatigue and how long to practice. It intrigues me. There are studies out there that show incremental ways to study (schoolwork) that seem to apply here. Most studies seem to indicate a similar period of time to study as mentioned in this article. Others suggest stair stepping down time. (Example: Study/Practice 2 hours, take 15 min break; Study/Practice 1 hour, take 30 min break; Study/Practice 30 mins, take extended break for the day, or even stop studying.) Another thing to consider might be the benefit of a practice session(s) similar in format to a tournament round (in terms of # of games and duration - perhaps LAN?)
